Hawks Nest 200k (August 8)

The Hawks Nest 200k is being offered on August 8, as part of the on-going Eastern PA R-12 series. Event details are posted at:

This route is based on the 2009 edition of the Water Gap 600k and was previously run on July 4. With the potential for a hot summer day in mind, the route heads up into the Poconos where the temperatures are typically 3-5 degrees cooler. In addition, most of the roads are shaded ... I can't think of a better course to get away from all the heat. Check out the July ride reports posted here:

Starting out at the Water Gap Diner we head north up the Allegheny Front through Canadensis and Promised Land. Instead of stopping at Hawley, we'll bypass the busy traffic by heading over to Rt 402 and then on along the scenic Lackawaxen River. After crossing the historic Roebling Aqueduct, we join up with scenic Rt 97 for the run to Port Jervis -- be sure to stop at one of the many scenic overlooks at Hawks Nest.

At Port Jervis, we begin our return leg back to the Water Gap start/finish -- down along the Delaware River. This time, we'll head over to Layton for a stop at the quaint Country Store and then finish up through the NJ side of the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area.

There are several steep, extended climbs. A triple or 39x27 is highly recommended.

Rider List

Postby Tom Rosenbauer » Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:05 am

I've heard from the following riders who plan to clip-in this Saturday:
- Paul Scearce (on a tandem this time, with his wife Naomi)
- Bill Fischer
- Bill Olsen
- Guy Harris
- Ron and Barb Anderson
- Your's truly
- Andy Brenner
- Paul Shapiro (new member)
- Walt Petigrew
- Christine Newman
- Len Zawodniak
- Carl June
- Jonathan Levitt (new member)

... drop me a note if you plan to ride as well. The weather forecast looks real promising -- it should be a great day for a ride!

Please note that the start/finish is at the Water Gap Diner -- I'll be there for breakfast around 6AM. I've made arrangements with the Water Gap Diner (the start/finish controle) to open a bit earlier ... the cook will be getting there at 5:30AM to fire up the grill. If you're planning to ride, please consider getting to the diner around 6AM for breakfast. Thanks! ... we have a great relationship with this establishment, and they really appreciate our business.

Lastly, having lights on hand is highly recommended -- the time limit is just after sunset.
