New Eastern PA R-12 event schedule for 1/3/09

Postby Tom Rosenbauer » Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:53 pm

Rick Carpenter is the organizer for the PA Dutch 200k, scheduled for Saturday, 1/3/09. Registration and event details available at:
http://users.rcn.com/trosenbauer/R12ClubJan1.html

I rode this course as a perminant in January of 2008 -- it's a great route that shows off the quiet back roads around Lancaster. The route passes the original Turkey Hill Dairy Plant & HQ. Also featured are a total of six covered bridges (one westbound, and five on the eastbound return)

Checkout ride report (11/22/08)

Postby Tom Rosenbauer » Tue Nov 25, 2008 1:29 pm

Rick, along with a few other hardy randonneurs, completed a check-out ride this past weekend (11/22/08). He forwarded the following ride report:

Hi Tom,

We had a frosty but 100% successful ride on Saturday – Riders were Andy Brenner, Joe Brown, Nick Bull, and yours truly. I have comments to the cue sheet, and will incorporate if you send me the Excel version. BTW, Nick plans on updating this GPS files (thx Nick!), so we could offer these to participants as well.

Some additional information regarding the upcoming 3Jan09 PA Dutch 200k – Feel free to post any/all on your site if you think valuable.
Pics from Saturday’s snowy randonnee are posted on my Flicker site:

Nick’s GPS results, in “MotionBased track” are posted at:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/epis ... ue=7192140

Surprisingly, this shows 10K feet of climbing. My Polar HRM shows 7400 feet total. Close enough for Rando use - bottom line, feel free to post the climbing however your heart desires! (the “official” permanent advertises this route at 7kft).

Cheers,

Rick

Question: I am interested in obtaining a GPS unit for cycling and the upcoming 200K in January.
I have noticed that the maps on the site of by DeLorme. Also, many post I have read speak about the garmin edge 305
or the Vista.
Any suggestions?

Joe Carbone

Response: Joe, I use 2 different versions of DeLorme for routing/cuesheets and an older Garmin GPS unit for scouting routes in my car. Recently, there have been many discussions on using GPS during an event, but I don't have any first hand experience that I can pass along ... the best source of advice would be the RANDON discussion list -- in particular, Nick Bull has offered a lot of good information lately. Hope you can join us for the January ride -- just a reminder that you will need to send in your PA club membership ahead of time so we can take care of the paperwork ... Thanks!

Question: Membership has been sent in.
Since this will be my first ride, do I have to pre-register beforehand?
If so, how do I go about doing that?

Thanks,

Joe

Response: Joe, I got your membership registration ... thanks! I've sent an e-mail to your optonline account with some additional details ... if you don't get that, send me an e-mail to trosenbauer@rcn.com Thanks!

Share hotel room?

Postby jsalazar1978 » Tue Dec 23, 2008 12:47 pm

Hi,

I made a reservation for January 2nd at the nearby EconoLodge in Douglassville, PA. I am willing to share my room if anyone is interested (I got a room with two double beds, no smoking). I am driving from Ithaca, NY so I can also pick-up someone along the way. I transport my bike on a Saris Bones rack. There is plenty of room for another bike on the rack if you are OK with that. My plan is to leave on Jan 2 early in the morning. I want to get to PA sometime in the afternoon, with plenty of time for bike prepping and rest. The last couple of brevets I got about 3 hours of sleep before the start. I want to avoid that this time around.

It was great to meet some of my fellow randonneurs this afternoon at the secret control in Lititz. Thanks Rick, for picking such a nice day for a ride. Here are some pics from the control:
