Neil C. at the Wawa in Browns Mills during our 77-mile club ride Saturday April 30, 2011
I had some unexpected ride changes this weekend, as an illness in the family made it impossible to ride the PA 400k with Shane and Roy as planned. Instead, I opted for two club rides: a 77-mile Princeton Freewheelers Ride Saturday and a 90-mile Cyclepaths ride Sunday.
The Saturday ride went very well. I rode with my old friends Neil and Mark the whole ride and with John A for the first half or so. And as is typical of my shorter rides, I had a big negative split. At the food stop at Browns Mills at mile 38, I had averages of 129 watts regular and 159 normalized power. Our average speed with a favorable wind was 17.1 mph. The return into the headwind was 159/175/16.1.
The Sunday ride didn’t work out so well. I had about 70 more good miles in my legs, but the ride lasted 90. I bonked badly at Rocky Hill and was forced to let Alan and five other rides go while Mitch stayed with me during a 30-minute break while I stocked up at the Wawa on food and drink to consume.
For the first 70 miles, I averaged 156/195/15.6. But I limped home over the last 20 in 104/120/14.0. The 120 normalized power is unusually low. Sometimes you have one of those days. It could be outside stress, lack of proper eating and drinking on the ride or some other cause. Whenever it happens, it’s a humbling experience.
